De samenvatting

Minoxidil and Finasteride are proven effective hair loss remedies, each with their own effect. Finasteride appears to be more effective in the long term, while Minoxidil provides faster results. Do you want maximum results? Then the combination may be worth considering.

How do Minoxidil and Finasteride work against hair loss?

Minoxidil and Finasteride take hair loss each in their own way and are both scientifically proven effective. We are happy to explain the differences for you.

Minoxidil is a liquid that you apply directly to your scalp twice a day. The product stimulates blood flow to the hair follicles and prolongs the growth phase of your hair. This allows hair to grow thicker, stronger and longer. It's most effective on the top of your head.
Finasteride is a tablet that you take daily. Finasteride lowers the DHT level in your body. DHT (dihydrotestosterone) is a hormone that damages hair follicles when genetically predisposed. By inhibiting the production of DHT, finasteride stops the breakdown of hair follicles and prevents further hair loss. In addition to the fact that finasteride inhibits hair loss, this study shows that the vast majority of men also reduce hair growth.

What does science say about the effectiveness of Minoxidil and Finasteride?

Scientific research shows that finasteride is more effective than minoxidil, according to, among other things, this study.

Long-term use shows that 80 to 90% of men with finasteride see a marked decrease in hair loss, and in most cases even regrowth. With minoxidil, this percentage is around 60%. The results with finasteride are also often more stable in the long term.

Nevertheless, Minoxidil has an advantage: it works faster. Many users notice an improvement in hair density within three months. With finasteride, it takes an average of five to six months to see results.

In addition, stopping taking either drug usually means that the results achieved will disappear over time. Consistent use is therefore essential.

Who does Minoxidil work better for, and who does Finasteride work for?

Both drugs are effective, but your choice depends on your complaints and preferences.

Minoxidil is especially suitable when:

  • You suffer from early hair loss, especially on the crown.
  • You'd rather not take medication.
  • You prefer to use a local treatment.
  • You should not use finasteride for medical reasons.

Finasteride is often better when:

  • You have an inherited hair loss with a receding hairline.
  • You want to get the best results.
  • You want to achieve long-term and stable results.

Note: Finasteride may cause side effects to a small number of users, such as reduced sex drive or influence on your state of mind. This occurs in less than 1% and often disappears after stopping.

Can you combine Minoxidil and Finasteride for better results?

Study shows that the best results are achieved when minoxidil and finasteride jointly are used. Not only does hair loss stop completely in almost all users, most hair regrowth is also observed. In practice, Minoxidil and Finasteride are therefore often used at the same time.

Which choice suits you best?

The right treatment varies from person to person. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do you want an easy-to-apply solution without pills? Then minoxidil is a good first step.
  • Looking for the most effective treatment against further hair loss? Then finasteride is often the best choice.
  • Do you want maximum effectiveness and are you motivated to treat daily? Then the combination of minoxidil and finasteride is worth considering.
